216? Truth? Pizza? Talking Heads Payola? It's really just a bulletpoint sort of an entry, so here it goes:
* Gas in Nashville: mostly in $2.25 region, but one Circle K offers $2.16 right now.
* I'm crafting my own theory of truth
* I just ate meatball pizza (mmm)
* Go to David Byrne's online journal (don't call it a blog!) and read the entry for 30 July on payola and other things -- pretty interesting
www.davidbyrne.comI just tried to contact David Byrne a week or so ago in order to interview him for my dissertation. I got an email back from Yale at LuakaBop and it was forwarded to his assistant...but Mr. Byrne is not granting any interviews at this time as he is working on a MUSICAL!
* I roll tomorrow for my prelim (wish me luck!)
SK, an Abiding LoveHere, I'm not referring to good old Soren Kierkegaard, although that love definitely abides. (Hey, he's Danish, okay?) I'm talking about Sleater Kinney, and the continuation of love comes from when I went to see them live, June 30th(?) at the Cannery Ballroom. Mind you, lots of people had been hyping this show to me and a bunch of friends were going, so I decided to get a ticket. I've never been the hugest Sleater Kinney fan -- I'd liked some of their tunes, including "Call the Doctor," as a college favorite. But I'd never bought an album. Then came
The Woods, their latest effort. My friend JT played their 11 minute epic on the radio and made all the levels go into the red due to the fact that the album is recorded LOUD for listening that is LOUDER. I was blown away, as I unpacked more boxes from my newly-moved apartment in early June. So I played em on my show a bit, and decided to go to when they came to Nashville. JT happened to be in Uganda at the time, so he couldn't go (so I REALLY needed to go because he was so psyched up about it). As the day came, and I bought my ticket, and the hours dwindled to showtime, all my friends were backing out on this thing. There were a bevy of excuses, none that struck me as particularly compelling. Anyway, fuck it, I had a ticket, I was going to the damn rock show.
The opening band did nothing for me -- so little, in fact, that I can't even remember their name. But Sleater Kinney, oh Sleater Kinney! It was their final stop on their tour, which could have been really good or really bad depending on how tired from the road they were -- but shit, those girls rocked! I hung out with the few friends of mine that did show up (Anna and Chris), and met some new ones. It was killer. They played both new and old stuff, and highlights included "Modern Girl," "Rollercoaster," and "Entertain," and a lovely version of "Let's Call it Love." I was converted at this show to being a real Sleater Kinney fan, and so I marched out to my favorite record shop (which I happen to like to do) and bought
The Woods. It's great morning music, if you're waking up, and good cooking music. And I'm still diggin it, weeks later. Give "Entertain" a spin if you get a chance. Maybe you'll dig it too.
